Rodgers Cleared to Play Against the Bears Sunday

by Jerry Bader

BIt seemed pretty clear Coach Mike McCarthy was hoping for Rodgers last week and by saying the decision on who would start at QB would come sooner this week than in recent weeks it seemed pretty clear # 12 was coming back to face the team that benched him for exactly one half of this NFL season (counting the game where he was injured). Only four people know for sure what the conversations have been like concerning Rodger's return: Rodger's, McCarthy, Ted Thompson and Dr. Patrick McKenzie. But I'm in the camp that believes Thompson was playing this conservatively, and I agree with that call.

Had the Bears won Sunday and locked up the NFC north, I doubt Rodgers would be suiting up this Sunday. And I definitely wouldn't agree with playing him under those circumstances. But a win puts the Packers in the playoffs. I realize they're a long shot to do much in the post-season if they get there, but I do agree with this decision, although I barely agree. Linebacker Clay Matthews re-injuring a broken thumb Sunday shows the dangers of putting back into play a star player who isn't 100%. And I doubt Rodgers is 100%.

I'll put enough faith in the Packers brain trust to believe he's not in serious risk of re-injuring his cracked collarbone. We'll see on Sunday if Rodgers can carry his team to another NFC North title.
