Liberals Freaking over Justice Ginsburg

by Jerry Bader

This is neither the first piece I've seen calling for Ginsburg to "take one for the team," nor the first one I've shared on this blog. Justices are appointed for life, for better or worse. Ruth Bader Ginsburg has no responsibility to accomodate liberals who fear she'll outlive the Obama Administration. This has grown from the occasional column nudging Ginsburg to an all out liberal movement attempting to force her to "do the right thing" for the liberal movement.

I realize that in today's hyper-partisan world this seems like something you would expect, but it's tremendously poor form to try to force a justice to cut short their career on the bench for the "greater good." Ginsburg has signaled in the recent past that she's not going anywhere. That, of course, is subject to change. President George W. Bush and, thus far, President Obama have been able to nothing more than maintain the status quo on the court. Apparently liberals are terrified at the prospect of the balance shifting.

Further, Ginsburg still on the court or the vacancy looming for the November 2016 elections would be a tremendous motivation for both sides. But it could serve Republicans even more if the nominee is someone who is considered moderate to the conservative base. You would think they'd prefer Chris Christie picking a Ginsburg successor as opposed to Hillary Clinton choosing one.
