Hawkeye down - Bulaga to IR

Posted by Mark Daniels on

The Packers returned from the week off with an enthusiastic and condensed workout today but with more somber news thrown in.  Veteran right tackle Bryan Bualaga's season is over.  He was placed on injured reserve today by General Manager Ted Thompson because of a serious hip injury that occured in the Arizona game last week.  The injury at this point will not require surgery but Bulaga will be re-examined in another month according to head coach Mike McCarthy.  This next man up thing is getting a bit much because there aren't many next men ready to step up.  Bulaga's departure leaves the offensive line with seven bodies.  T.J. Lang will move full time to right tackle with Evan Dietrich-Smith taking Lang's place at left guard.  Josh Sitton will take reps at tackle just in case there's another emergency with Marshall Newhouse holding firm at left tackle and Jeff Saturday at center.  One more hurt and the offensive line could be really hurting with only a pair of undrafted rookie free agents backing up the starting five.  Don Barclay from West Virginia made the team in camp because of his scrappy style, playing primarily guard but now he's getting a crash course at tackle.  Greg Van Roten is an Ivy leaguer from Penn who is taking reps at center and both guard positions.  Derrick Sherrod has a chance to join the mix by December.  His three week window to get activated from the PUP list is now on the clock as he hopes to come back from last year's broken leg. To take Bulaga's roster spot, the Packers have re-signed linebacker Vic So'oto, who made the team as an undrafted rookie last year and was cut earlier this season.  He had a three week shot with the Oakland Raiders but was released last week.  McCarthy didn't have an update on Clay Matthews and his hamstring, he'll be tested again on Tuesday with further word on his availability for the Detroit game coming on Wednesday.  That's when the first, formal injury report for the week will be released.  Greg Jennings was back in the locker room for the first time since undergoing his sports hernia surgery in Philadelphia.  Jennings said he feels great and is hoping the medical staff gives him the clearance to start running soon.  Jennings remains optimistic he'll get back on the field for the stretch run.  On the link below, you'll hear the comments from McCarthy and the magnificent seven offensive line being asked to hold it together for the final seven weeks of the season.
