We've heard alot about the "obesity epidemic" in the U.S. over the past several years. And I know there are some people who are just unable to lose weight due to medical reasons. But for many others, it appears that the solution just might be a matter of getting off their duffs and exercising.
Check out these numbers. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 80,000 participants, aged 20 and older, between the years 2003 to 2008 from the American Time Use Survey. This was a national telephone-based poll that asked people what they did in the preceding 24 hours.
The top two answers, by far, were sedentary activities: eating and drinking (95.6%) and watching TV (80.1%). Only 5% of respondents reported vigorous physical activities. And here's the kicker: when asked about what moderate activities they had engaged in, the top answer was "food and drink preparation." So it seems that when people aren't eating/drinking, they're PREPARING their food and drinks! I think we've stumbled onto something here.
