This was a stunning moment in last night's U.S. Senate Debate. Tommy Thompson called Tammy Baldwin out on this contribution from this radical group that is essentially an Iranian Sympathizer Group. Yes, Tommy misstated the group's name, which I'm guessing Baldwin will use as a weasel out for saying this:
But her campaign is quoted in the story Tommy referenced, so clearly she knew what he was talking about, even if he didn't get the name of the group right. Here's more from the Thompson campaign:
"Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin should immediately return the $60,000 that she took from a pro-Iran organization that opposes sanctions and supports the current regime," said Thompson. "Confronted with the opportunity to come clean with Wisconsin voters about the money she received from the Council for a Livable World, Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin chose to tell a bold-faced lie instead. Her ties to left-wing fringe groups like MoveOn.org and the Council for a Livable World and her record of opposition to sanctions put her directly at odds with the national security interests of our country. Voters deserve to know that Baldwin is too extreme for Wisconsin families and too extreme for the soldiers who are fighting to keep our country safe."
BACKGROUND
The Council's Research Center Criticized The U.S. For Arresting "Iranian Representatives" In Iraq And Opposes Any Further Arrests In The Future. "Unfortunately, United States policy has been to publicly threaten and insult Iran while taking provocative actions such as adopting a policy of regime change, attempting to increase unilateral sanctions, deploying additional military assets in the region, and arresting Iranian representatives in Iraq. Such policies are counterproductive, strengthening Iranian hardliners and weakening the position of anti-nuclear and pro-democracy elements in Iran." - In 2006, The U.S. Military Found Specific Intelligence That Two Arrested Iranian Representatives Were Involved In Attacks Against American Forces In Iraq. "The American military said Tuesday that it had credible evidence linking Iranians and their Iraqi associates, detained here in raids last week, to criminal activities, including attacks against American forces. Evidence also emerged that some detainees had been involved in shipments of weapons to illegal armed groups in Iraq...General Caldwell made his remarks by e-mail in response to a query about the raids, first reported Monday in The New York Times. 'Some of that specific intelligence,' he said via e-mail, 'dealt explicitly with force-protection issues, including attacks on MNF-I forces.' MNF-I stands for Multinational Force-Iraq, the official name of the American-led foreign forces there." (Sabina Tavernise, "U.S. Says Captured Iranians Can Be Linked to Attacks," The New York Times, 12/27/06)
- Then-Defense Secretary Robert Gates Acknowledged Iranians Provided Insurgents With Weapons, Training, And Technology To Attack Coalition Forces In Iraq. "The Justice Department has charged five people, including an Iranian man, and four companies with illegally exporting specialized transmitters from a U.S. company to Iran that later were found in unexploded improvised explosive devices in Iraq. The indictment charges Hossein Larijani, an Iranian citizen, with illegally exporting the radio frequency transmitters through companies and individuals in Singapore who then forward the items to Iran... Iranian influence in Iraq has been a concern for several years now, especially when U.S. officials noticed that Iran was providing insurgents in Iraq with explosively formed projectile devices. In an interview with Bloomberg in June 2011 before he retired, then Defense Secretary Robert gates said Iran is 'facilitating weapons, they're facilitating training, there's new technology that they're providing... They're stepping this up, and it's a concern.'" (Jason Ryan, "Five Charged In Iranian Smuggling Network Linked To Iraq IEDs," ABC News, 10/25/11)
The State Department Said Iran Was "The Most Active State Sponsor Of Terrorism" In 2006. "Iran remained the most active state sponsor of terrorism. Its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) were directly involved in the planning and support of terrorist acts and continued to exhort a variety of groups, especially Palestinian groups with leadership cadres in Syria and Lebanese Hizballah, to use terrorism in pursuit of their goals." - The State Department: "Iranian Government Forces Have Been Responsible For At Least Some Of The Increasing Lethality Of Anti-Coalition Attacks By Providing Shia Militants With The Capability To Build IEDs With Explosively Formed Projectiles Similar To Those Developed By Iran And Lebanese Hizballah." "Iran continued to play a destabilizing role in Iraq, which appeared to be inconsistent with its stated objectives regarding stability in Iraq. Iran provided guidance and training to select Iraqi Shia political groups, and weapons and training to Shia militant groups to enable anti-Coalition attacks. Iranian government forces have been responsible for at least some of the increasing lethality of anti-Coalition attacks by providing Shia militants with the capability to build IEDs with explosively formed projectiles similar to those developed by Iran and Lebanese Hizballah. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard was linked to armor-piercing explosives that resulted in the deaths of Coalition Forces. The Revolutionary Guard, along with Lebanese Hizballah, implemented training programs for Iraqi militants in the construction and use of sophisticated IED technology. These individuals then passed on this training to additional militants in Iraq." (Office Of The Coordinator For Counterterrorism, "Country Reports on Terrorism," The State Department, 4/30/07)
