Is This Campaign Email Deceptive? 2ND Update, Not from Thompson Campaign?

Posted by Jerry Bader on

The person who forwarded it to me thinks it is. I've reached out to Governor Walker's office and asked if Walker is comfortable with this but have gotten no response. Interesting, the praise quoted here comes from an article that reports Walker is mulling an endorsement but hadn't made one:

Subject: Governor Scott Walker Shows Support for Tommy Thompson!

Excerpts of Governor Scott Walker's comments on Tommy Thompson:

By Craig Gilbert of the Journal Sentinel Aug. 3, 2012

Walker did defend Thompson in the interview from critics on the right who've questioned his conservatism.

Walker called that a "joke," saying almost no Republican is "pure" in the sense of having nothing in their record that's open to question from conservative critics.

Walker praised Thompson's record as Wisconsin's longest-serving governor, though at the same time critiquing his campaign.

To me, (in) Thompson's campaign, there's very little talk about his strengths. You think about the issues facing the country, the economy and budget. I mean this is a guy who used the line-item veto successfully more than any other governor in the country, saved taxpayers all this money, cut taxes, property taxes, income taxes, obviously was a champion of . . . school choice, welfare reform.

Said Walker: "I still think there's a very compelling argument to be made about Thompson where you say instead of experience being a liability in the sense of being in (politics) for a while, he's got all the experience to understand what's going on, yet there's nothing more he needs to prove.

"So you get that independence you normally get from a private-sector guy combined with the experience you get from somebody who's been around the block, who knows what's going on, but isn't scrambling just to hold on to their current occupation.

I received this response from the Thompson campaign's Brian Nemoir:

I am unclear as to what the deception would be. Everything cited is 100% factual.  Governor Walker made strong comments in regards to the race that were specifically complimentary of Tommy Thompson.  Gov. Walker did not make mention of any other candidate in his comments.

We appreciate the support of David Walker along with countless other people across this state who recognize both Tommy Thompson and Gov. Scott Walker are bold conservative reformers.

2ND Update: Nemoir now says this email isn't from the Thompson campaign. This revelation came after I asked him whether Scott Walker was okay with it. Yet int he same email Nemoir continues to defend an email the campaign didn't send??? And why ON EARTH did he defend it my first exchange with him and not point out at that time it wasn't from the campaign????
