The response from the Prosser campaign:
Thirty-three years ago an Outagamie County Mother came to then DA David Prosser and the sheriff with a complaint alleging her two young children were sexually abused by a priest (Fr. John Patrick Feeney)- namely being inappropriately touched while at the victims’ home. Previously the mother had approached the area diocese, which failed to act.
The sheriff’s department did conduct an investigation, including several interviews, the matter was also brought to a second DA in 1979.
After an investigation, Prosser made the decision not to prosecute. Prosser, while sympathetic to the victims, believed the evidence wasn’t strong enough to convict the accused as it would lead to competing individual testimony between an adult priest and two boys, and that a jury trial would be emotionally challenging for the young victims. Lack of a corroborating eyewitness and what was then believed to be a one-time incident were key contributors to such a decision
In 2002-twenty four years later, when both victims were adults, then DA Vince Biskupic, reopened the case. He went to trial in 2004 with key pieces of evidence that had not been revealed to the sheriff’s investigators and/or Prosser during the initial investigation.
Prosser, during a debate with Kloppenburg Friday night, asked her to urge the group to pull this shameful ad, pointing out the group's First Amendment rights to run these lies. What a cop-out. She can accept their rights while urging them to stop this trash. Further, one of the victims, Troy Merryfield, said in a statement that he considers the ad inaccurate and offensive, and were he a Wisconsin resident today he would vote for Prosser(he resides in Virginia). Liberals want this seat so badly, there is no level to which they won't stoop.
