  • Car flooding with Water

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

"The best thing about dreams is that fleeting moment, when you are between asleep and awake, when you don’t know the difference between reality and fantasy, when for just that one moment you feel with your entire soul that the dream is reality, and it really happened.”   - Oprah

    Dear Lauri,
I had a dream my fiancé was taking me to the ocean and on the way we went over a bridge and our boys flew out of the car and so did my fiancé I was stuck while the car filled up and the next thing I knew I was right there flying next to them.    – Sheri 28, Marshall, MI

Lauri: Is there anything going on that you fear is going to pull you away from your fiancé and children? Like a new job or some new responsibility? The bridge is your ability to get through some sort of transition in your life. The rising water suggests you are becoming increasingly overwhelmed and perhaps fearful you're not going to make it through this transition. However, your dream seems to be encouraging you at the end by showing you flying next to your family, as if to say, "Just stick this through and then you'll see that things will really start looking up for you."

Lorie replies: Actually yes. My stress level is through the roof and my boyfriend has been looking for a job or possibly going back to school. But if he went back to school he would have to live in a dorm and not be with us. We are also about to lose our apartment actually and we are trying to find a place to move. With him considering school, I guess I am feeling like I would be left behind in a sense.

  • Parked Cars

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

"When dreaming I'm guided through another world, time and time again. At sunrise I fight to stay asleep 'cause I don't want to leave the comfort of this place." - Creed, "Higher"

    Dear Lauri,
I dreamed I was trying to walk home with my dogs and my daughter. There were cars parked all over the place and in my way. I couldn't get through. In particular a golf cart type vehicle that was carrying trash just kept showing up in my path. It was very annoying. – Lorie 49, Lansing, MI

Lauri: Trying to get home in a dream means you are trying to get back to normal in some form or fashion in waking life. What has thrown you off your regular routine recently? All the parked cars that are in your way suggest that either there a lot of things in your life on hold, making it difficult for you to get back to normal or there is one thing on hold that is causing several problems. The trash seems to suggest there are useless issues blocking your progress or perhaps you are feeling trashed in some way. Whatever the case, it is something that – like the trash - you need to rid yourself of or you will continue to feel stuck.

Lorie replies: This makes a lot of sense. I lost my driver’s license in 2007 and I've done everything right to get it back but they keep extending the restriction. It's now extended through 2014! For no reason, it seems, except because they can.

  • I Gave Birth to a Leg

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

    Dear Lauri,
I dreamt that I was pregnant and going into labor but didn't have any labor pains, just tons of pressure in my groin. I then delivered just the baby's leg. I knew I needed to deliver the rest of the baby but was scared to because I was afraid that the baby would be sick. I never did deliver the rest of the baby.  – Candace 31, Lehi, UT

Lauri: The labor in your dream may be connected to something you have been laboring over in real life. Have you been laboring over a decision? Have you been working hard to get a "leg up" on the competition in some way? Or is there something you've been working on that has only partially born fruit? The leg could mean you have only completed the first leg of a journey. Just as you were afraid to deliver the rest of the baby in the dream, what are you afraid to finish in real life for fear that it might not turn out the way you had hoped? Also, the pressure you feel in the groin may be connected to waking life pressure you are giving yourself to complete this project, idea, issue, etc. because the job is not yet done.

Candice replies: I work in sales and had a baby (all intact, thank goodness) 3 months ago. There are many competitors in my work arena, and it is high pressure. I do feel that I am getting better at balancing work and a new baby, but still feel a lot of 'pressure' to do a better job at home and work. I have thought that a career change may be needed, but I just started with this company and love it. I really want to make it work. I have had a few successes since being back, but I do fear I need more to make it happen. You are once again spot on! Thank you for helping me understand where this dream was stemming from!

  • Dog with Chicken Claws

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

"Dreams are illustrations... from the book your soul is writing about you." - Dr. John Baumgold

    Dear Lauri,
Last night I had a dream that I had a stalker. He showed up at my house with a dog that ran in and started eating my dog's food. When I was trying to kick the dog out, I realized it had claws like a chicken and was scratching my feet. – Jennifer 38, Nashville, TN

Lauri: The stalker represents some issue or mindset you can't seem to shake, to the point that it may even be intruding upon the dynamics of your home life. The dog with chicken claws suggests it may be connected to a relationship that is now "eating away" at you hence the dog eating your dog's food. The chicken claws seem to indicate this is about an issue or a person who is threatening to claw their way in to your life or into your psyche. Also, have you been "chicken" to do anything about this? The attention brought to your feet may be the way your inner mind is telling you to put your metaphoric foot down about this issue once and for all.

Jennifer replies: I think the stalker is my hubby’s ex-wife. She is very difficult and bitter towards us both. We have been battling with her over summer schedules with their kids and have finally decided we need to get a mediator to help us negotiate. She rarely includes us in planning birthday parties, etc and it's SO infuriating. I have become very resentful that I spend so much time caring for her kids and she is so ungrateful and disrespectful. When I try to throw her out of my mind, she claws her way back in. This makes sense now.

  • Traffic Jam

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

"The function of dreams is to maintain a correct balance in our lives. A dream puts us back into proper balance. It comes to reveal, not to hide."   - Dr. John Baumgold

    Dear Lauri,
Last night I dreamt that I was in a traffic jam because there was an accident up ahead. The only way out of the jam was to drive on the opposite side of the road. I woke up as I was making my way over to drive up the wrong way to the intersection so I could continue on my way. – Nancy 54, San Francisco, CA

Lauri: The traffic jam represents some blockage in your waking life. What area of your life is at a standstill right now, most likely due to confusion or too much on your plate? Whatever it is, your dream is showing you that the way to free yourself is to back out of something, hence going the wrong way on the freeway. What in your life do you think would be best to "reverse course" on? The accident in your dream is "up ahead" meaning, if you don't back out of this situation there is likely to be a problem for you in waking life "just down the road," perhaps even an emotional crash.

    Nancy replies:
Wow! There is a lot on my plate. We have money issues but I think those are just about over. I was in an accident four years ago that has left me with Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, which means I am in pain all the time and always trying to find medications to help. Work is really busy and my husband is, well, being a husband. I think the "emotional" crash is what I am heading for if I don't slow down and take some time for myself because – as we all hate to admit - we do everything for everyone but very little for ourselves. This condition can have periods of depression which I believe I am headed for if I just don't take some me time and this dream might be that warning sign. Amazing stuff!

  • Sink in the Living Room

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

    Dear Lauri,
I was in my father’s apartment where I grew up. I saw a kitchen sink in the living room and thought that was odd. It was full of dirty dishes and water was filling the sink. I took out the drain basket to let the water out, but it would not drain. I told myself I have to talk to my father about getting a plumber to fix the sink.   – Marie 59, Wauconda, IL

Lauri: Are there any issues from your childhood that are clogging and dirtying up your otherwise clean psyche? Your father could also represent your ability to bring home the bacon and manage said bacon. Any money issues that you need to clear up? The sink is in the living room because your dream is showing you this is a daily issue you are "living" with and will continue to live with if you don't clean up and unclog the issue. The ending of the dream is usually the most important part of the message and I believe the message your dream is telling you is that a good conversation is to be had over this in order to fix it, whether it's with your father, a money manager or with yourself... it needs to happen.

    Marie replies:
My father is 87 and has turned all of his finances over to my sister. He has also given my sister everything he inherited from his sister that passed about 2 years ago. I DO have money concerns about this and it bothers me that he gave her his power of attorney.  Supposedly I was listed as second, but I have never received copies of the documents. My sister claims to have them, but does not give me a copy even though I have asked for them several times. I do need to have a face to face with her.

Fascinating Dream Fact: The hammer, anvil and stirrup, the tiny bones in the inner ear, vibrate during REM sleep. This is believed to contribute to the ringing, buzzing, whispering or crashing sound that is sometimes heard upon waking.

  • My Dog Turned into a Fish

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

    Dear Lauri,
I dreamed that my dad and dog and I were on a plane when the wings broke off and we crashed into the ocean. We survived but my dog had turned into a fish. With its fins and tail severed and died in my arms. Also the ocean turned out to be a huge pool.   – Candice 31, Middletown, NY

Lauri: The plane crash suggests something you had high hopes for came crashing down instead of reaching new and higher levels. This most likely has to do with a relationship since your dog was a part of the dream. Dogs can usually be connected to a relationship in your life where there is friendship and loyalty. The breaking off of the wings suggests there has been a break up. Your dog turned into a fish because your dreaming mind is telling you there are other fish in the sea... and at the same time another part of you is telling you, "No more relationships for now," hence the fish dying in your arms. The fins and tail are severed just like the wings of the plane that broke off, which means your wiser inner dreaming mind is telling you it is best that you sever ties. The ocean represents the vast, even overwhelming idea of dating again... it shrinks down to a pool because your dream is trying to show you the "dating pool" isn't as overwhelming as it may seem at the moment. You can totally handle it! Don't be overwhelmed or afraid. You deserve a healthy life companionship.

    Candice replies:
That interpretation was entirely spot on. I did just go through an awful breakup with a guy that had turned abusive towards me. I knew the dream stemmed from the breakup and am finding it probably is best to sever all ties from that person. The explanation was extremely helpful Thank you so much!

  • Seance

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

"Man is a genius when he is dreaming." ― Akira Kurosawa

    Dear Lauri,
I was sitting around a table with unknown people and we were having a séance. When the girl to the right became demonic and evil and turned to me and said, "I will give her you're mean message!" Then I woke up. Not sure what the meaning is behind that. - Shardae 24, West Jordan, UT

Lauri: A séance suggests that you are either rehashing old issues that ought to be dead or you are trying to get back in touch with a part of yourself that you feel has died off. Also, what you are told in a dream is something you are really telling yourself. The possessed girl is either you or someone around you that has become overwhelmed with anger or guilt. Your dreaming mind is trying to show you that these negative feelings are bad and need to be overcome. The "mean message" may be something negative or hurtful that you have said to someone recently or it is something that needs to be said but you fear it will be perceived as "mean."

Shardae replies: I can connect this to me being mad and full of guilt because I can't help out around the house and with my daughter due to a major surgery I recently had. Also we’re on one income now and I feel like it’s my fault that Christmas this year won't be great due to the lack of gifts from Santa. This makes perfect sense. Thank you.

  • My New 6th Finger

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

    Dear Lauri,

I dreamed I was washing my hands when I suddenly noticed a little 6th finger on my right hand between my ring and middle fingers. I wondered how long it's been there. I should have noticed it, especially since I have had that 6th toe on my right foot for awhile now. Then I remembered that my 6th toe hurts when I wear work boots. My 6th finger was painless. In waking life I have 10 fingers and 10 toes.  – Trista, Wausau, WI

Lauri:  Your dream begins with you washing your hands, which means there is something in waking life you don't want to be a part of, something you are "washing your hands" of. But in the process you notice a new little finger. This suggests there is new growth within you; most likely it is growth in your ability to handle the situation. The pain in your foot that your dream is referring to is most likely emotional pain. Have you had to put your foot down and take a stand about something in waking life recently even though it was painful to do so? If so, your dream is showing you that you've done it before and you can do it again and this time around will be a fairly easy and pain-free process.

Trista replies: Thank you for the insightful interpretation! A year ago my boyfriend took a better paying job two hours away. He wanted me to move with him but it wasn't so easy. I have joint custody of my older two kids who were in the middle of their school year. He ended up moving by himself leaving us in house I couldn't afford to rent. It was devastating. I have since moved into a smaller place, paid off my debts, and adjusted my work hours around the children's school times. Recently, he put pressure on me again to make the move. I told him that for now it has to be ok to just see each other on the weekends. It’s not an ideal situation, but I'm comfortable with it.

  • Exploring Mars

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

    Dear Lauri,

Two nights ago I dreamed I was on Mars in shorts and a T shirt exploring. No one else was around at all, just me checking out the scenery. I remember it being quite fascinating...and cold. What could this mean? - Eric 42, North Manchester, IN

Lauri:  Are you feeling like you are in your own world in some way lately, or perhaps that your world is changing? Being alone suggests you either need some alone time or are feeling left out. The coldness in the dream is yet another indication you are feeling left out… in the cold. The fact that you are wearing shorts is not insignificant. In fact, every little detail in a dream has a message. The shorts tell us that either you need to cut something in your life short such as a behavior, relationship or train of thought OR you are currently worried something in your life will be cut short. It is a good sign, however that you are exploring the scenery in your dream. This means you are either doing some introspection right now or you are exploring options available to you.

    Fascinating Sleep Fact:
If you’re a college student, you NEED to get your sleep! 18% of college men and 30% of college women report having suffered from insomnia in the past 3 months. Sleep deprivation in students has been linked to lower GPAs because sleep affects concentration, memory and the ability to learn.

  • Hooded Figure

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

    Dear Lauri,

I keep having a dream that I'm sleeping and someone I can't see comes in and tries to suffocate me. Then suddenly I’m behind this person. I hit them and I take the hood off and their face is blank! - Allison 21, Grand Rapids, MI

Lauri:  Some of the symbols in this dream sound like you are experiencing Sleep Paralysis, which is a result of not getting enough sleep. The most common symptoms are a sinister presence in the room, a pressure on the chest making it difficult to breathe and the inability to scream or move. However, the other symbols make this seem more like an actual REM dream that has a message for you so I’m going to go with that. The fact that you're sleeping means there may be a an issue that you have been turning a blind eye towards, something your inner mind wants you to "wake up" to and see it for what it truly is. The suffocation suggests you feel this issue is beginning to close in on you and is becoming more of a problem. The hood on the figure is another symbol of keeping yourself in the dark about this issue or at least keeping your thoughts to yourself. The advice in this dream comes in the form of you taking the hood off and seeing a blank face. That means you must remove your fear and FACE this once and for all. Once you do, and deal with the issue properly, the dreams will stop because as it is now, these recurring dreams are the way you are nagging yourself about this ongoing, unresolved issue.

Allison replies: My children have been with my family for almost a year and I've been fighting to get them back but I have also been hiding from the situation and not openly discussing what’s been going on. This makes sense. Thank you.

  • Close Shave

    Posted by Lauri Quinn Loewenberg

"Without enough sleep, we all become tall two-year-olds." - JoJo Jensen

    Dear Lauri,
I dreamed I was scrubbing my legs with a big hand scrubber with little razors in it. It was effectively exfoliating and shaving my legs painlessly! - Lisa 46, Turlock, CA

Lauri:  Shaving your legs in a dream means you are preparing for intimacy in waking life, believe it or not! However, you are exfoliating rather than shaving, so that makes me think you may be in the process of ridding yourself of an intimate relationship. I also wonder if you have recently come clean about something or have had a "close shave", a narrow escape of some sort. Whatever the case, it seems like you have handled something smoothly and effortlessly, and what you thought might be an emotionally painful situation turned out to be okay.

Lisa replies: I started dating a new person who decided to stick with his ex. It was frustrating but I am about over it. I did consider having an affair with him but that is very much against my nature and I have ended those thoughts.

FASCINATING SLEEP FACT: In a study of migraine sufferers, it was found that sleeping with a 30-degree elevation of the head resulted in a dramatic decrease in headaches with an additional bonus of a reduction in sinus congestion (including baggy eyes!). Researchers suggest that raising the head might even have an impact on Alzheimer's, ADHD and glaucoma.
